Information about ClarNan Editions
ClarnNan
Editions has
been publishing historic music by women composers since
1984. Several volumes are published each year. The
company is named for Clara Schumann, Nannerl Mozart, and
Nannette Streicher, geboren Stein (who built Beethoven's
favorite pianos), since among them they pursued most of
the principal musical occupations - performance,
composition, instrument-building, editing and teaching.
The
first volume, Isabella Leonarda's Missa Prima
from Op. 18 (1696), had previously been recorded by
Leonarda Productions in New York by the Schola Cantorum
of the University of Arkansas, using the edition made by
Barbara Jackson (in 1999 it was reissued on CD by
Leonarda Records). Following release of the LP, the
Schola began to receive requests for performance parts,
suggesting that there would be a demand for the
publication not only of this work but also other music by
women composers fo the past. The aim of ClarNan Editions is to make their music
available in affordable, practical, informative editions,
including complete performance parts sets for all scores.
Barbara
Garvey Jackson, founder, editor and publisher of ClarNan Editions studied at the University
of Illinois (B.M.), Eastman School of Music (M.M.), and
Standford University (Ph.D.). She has taught music in the
Los Angeles public schools, at Arkansas Technological
University in Russellville, and for thirty-two years at
the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she is
now Professor Emerita. Her research on women composers
has included journal articles on Florence Price and
Camilla de Rossi, entries for anthologies of music by
women, the chapter on 17th and 18th century women in
Women in Music: A History; and entries on
women composers in The New Grove Dictionary of
American Music, Notable American Women, New Grove
Dictionary of Women Composers, and the second
edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians. She coauthored a music theory text, two
books on the minnesingers, and a string bowing dictionary
and has also edited baroque violin music. Her major
reference work on the locations of sources of music by
historic women composers, "Say Can You Deny
Me": A Guide to Surviving Music by Women from the
16th through the 18th Centuries, was published by
the University of Arkansas Press, Fayetteville, AR in
1994.
Brief
biographies of other editors of individual volumes of ClarNan Editions are given with their
editions.
